SPATIAL ORDER


ORGANIZING ACCORDING TO SPATIAL ORDER

Spatial order is organizing according to how things are arranged or positioned from left to right, top to bottom, outside to inside, etc.

Transitional Expressions that indicate direction or position:  outside, inside, near, beyond, ahead, above, beneath, behind, below, along on, in by, under, between, to the right of, to the left of, in the distance, to the north, to the south, to the east, to the west, etc.

PART ONE B:  Choose one of the pictures below (or your own picture) to describe. Be sure to cut and paste it into Evernote above your paragraph.  Use spatial order in your description. Include and underline/bold transitional expressions that indicate position and direction.

PART TWO “A”-CONTRACT:  The following sentences are scrambled.  Arrange them so they make a smooth flowing paragraph with a topic sentence.

Unscrambling Paragraphs #1
__A.  The judicial, or Supreme Court, decides whether or not laws are constitutional.
__B.  It is the legislators’ job to listen to what the people say and to pass laws that will respond to their needs.
__C.  There are three major parts to the United States government.
__D.  The second part is the executive branch.
__E.  He also has the power to veto bills passed by the legislators.
__F.  The legislature is composed of senators and representatives who are elected by the people.
__G.  In conclusion, each part of the government has its own powers and duties that help the country to operate.
__H.  The first is the legislative part.
__I.  The president is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
__J.  The executive branch is headed by the president.
__K.  The third part of the government is the judicial.


Unscrambling Paragraphs #2
Unscramble the paragraph and also cross out the irrelevant sentence.
A.    __One of the central components of writing is the paragraph. 
B.     __When most students think of a paragraph, they hold onto the old myths about length, where a paragraph is a minimum of five sentences.
C.     __A paragraph, however, is a group of sentences or a single sentence that forms a unit. 
D.    __Length or appearance is not a factor in determining whether a section in a paper is a paragraph. 
E.     __In fact, it is not the number of sentences that construct a paragraph, but it is the unity and coherence of ideas among those sentences that makes a paragraph a paragraph. 
F.      __For instance, in some styles of writing, a paragraph can be one sentence. 
G.    __As long as that sentence expresses the paper's central idea, that sentence can serve the function of a paragraph. 
H.    __The five paragraph essay is always the preferred choice of a completed composition.
I.       __Ultimately, strong paragraphs contain a sentence or sentences unified around one central, controlling idea. 
J.       __When the paragraph is complete, it should serve to bring the reader into your paper and
guide his/her understanding of what has been read. 
K.    __Whether that completion happens with one sentence or with twenty, the end result is still a paragraph.
