Fragments #2

6 - Run-ons #2 Assignment

PART A - Fix and punctuate the passages below, eliminating all run-ons.  Do not create any fragments in the process.

Having been excused early, we hurried to the locker room and changed into our uniforms when the coach called us, we were ready to go the big bus drew up in the driveway, and just as we had done a dozen other times, we piled in and took our usual seats, this trip was different, however, everybody knew how different it was we would return either as champions of the state or as just another second-rate team.

It was the hottest day we could remember, coming down the street, we were sure we could see heat waves rising from the sidewalk, we felt as though we’d never get home we ambled up the street in a daze hoping we’d last just one more block, we knew if we could make it there would be large bottles of ice cold soda awaiting us what a relief!

PART B  - Fix all run-ons and fragments in this passage.

Our national bird.  It is the great bald eagle.  As most Americans know.  Similar to the bald eagle is the golden eagle.  Which has a wingspread up to seven and a half feet.  The national bird is protected by law, but the golden eagle is not, the result is that hunters are rapidly diminishing the number of these great birds.  If the golden eagles are not also given the protection they need.  They may become extinct.  In just a few years.

Mona Lisa Edit

Posted Mon Aug 20, 2012 at 12:22 pm
FIX THE FRAGMENTS IN THIS STORY ABOUT THE MONA LISA PAINTING. ADD WORDS OR CONNECT THE SENTENCES, BUT DO NOT CREATE RUN-ONS.

Almost every book on art includes a preproduction of the Mona Lisa. One of the most famous paintings in the world. The Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo Da Vinci. Who worked on it for four years (1503-1506). The painting was never quite finished. After working for several hours. Leonardo would sit down in front of the Mona Lisa to quiet his nerves. Some people say that he did not finish the painting. Because he wanted an excuse to keep it with him.

There is a mysterious smile on the face of the woman in the painting. Which has intrigued people for centuries. Although no one know the true explanation of the smile. Several different legends have grown up about it. One story says that the woman was smiling sadly when she sat for the portrait. Because her child had died. Another story, however, goes on to say that Leonardo hired musicians to play during the sittings. Flutists and violin players. So that he could capture the young woman's rapt expression.

When Leonardo left Italy and moved to France. He took the painting with him. The French king persuaded him to sell the painting. Which now hangs in the Louvre. An art museum in Paris. The Mona Lisa has been exhibited in several countries. So that many people can have a chance to see the woman with the mysterious smile.

 Day 5 - Run-on Sentences

PART A - Fix this paragraph and get rid of all run-ons.  Do not create any fragments in the process!

On Friday night I plan to start my new job as a cook at Hardees, I’m really nervous about that because i can’t even fry an egg at home.  My folks told me they were sick and tired of having to pay me an allowance plus dish out more money every time I want to go to a movie or game, and they said I had to get a job, and so that’s why I’m putting on my Hardee’s cap at 4:00 P.M. tomorrow night and starting my career as a “burger boy.”  My duties include squirting burgers with catsup and mustard, flinging pickles on them, and popping them into a bun, I have to fry them for exactly three and a half minutes first, though.  I am really nervous I am afraid I’ll get behind or make a mistake.  The worst thing that can happen is I could get fired, which is really not so awful since I could always get a different job but my folks won’t let me use their car if I don’t start paying for gas so I’d better not blow it.  Wish me luck this is going to be a real challenge!

PART B - Follow the same directions.

Paul bought some skis, and he decided he must learn to ski systematically, and so he asked himself what to do first.  The answer was to consult an instructor and the instructor pointed out that it was dangerous to ski if you didn’t know how to fall down properly, and so Paul thanked her, and he went home, and he dressed in his new ski clothes, and he went out on the slopes and practiced falling down all day.  he sprained his wrist at three o’clock, and he twisted his leg at 4:36, and he left the slopes at 4:38, and now the skis are mine.  I bought them from Paul for a song, and so tomorrow I plan to take my first fall at 9:30 sharp.

Joan thinks she can speak French, but she made a funny mistake the other day when Lisa came limping into class with a bandage on her ankle, and she had sprained it while playing hockey, so Joan thought she would show off her French.  She meant to say c’est dommage, and it means “that’s too bad,” but she said c’est fromage instead, and it means “that’s cheese,” but Joan was quite proud of herself until Mrs. Stevens pointed out her mistake.

PART C -  There are both choppy and rambing sentences in this passage.  Revise it so the sentences are clear, well written, and varied.

The dam is not a modern invention.  It was used in ancient times.  It was used very early in Egypt.  It was used to dam the Nile River.  The first dam recorded in history was built about 2600 B.C., it was a large stone dam.  It was located about eighteen miles south of Memphis.  This dam was an engineering failure, it fell apart shortly after it was built during a period of heavy rains.  Dams were also built during the Roman Empire.  The Romans built dams to hold back the water that came during rainy seasons.   They built dams to hold back water so that there would be a steady water supply during dry seasons. These dam were called reservoirs.  Reservoirs are still very important today.
